Post Office Art in California

California has a vast supply of Post Office Art and I have just begun to scratch the surface. The fall of 2018 saw me in downtown LA so I had the opportunity to check out the paintings that were in walking distance from my hotel. I enjoy downtown anyway with its iconic buildings and the Pueblo de Los Angeles.

I was pessimistic about getting in to the old Post Office which is now a US Courthouse but when I told the guard I wanted to get a photo of the painting in the lobby he was okay with it. I just had to go through the metal detector.

The result was the picture at the top of this page. The lighting wasn't great but the photo turned out all right.

Heading east from the courthouse brought me to Union Station, one of my favorite buildings and a place everyone should visit.

Just to the south (in the direction of Chinatown) is the US Post Office Terminal Annex. I had no idea what I would find there but was amazed at what I found.

In the arches of the vaulted ceilings are frescoes that show the Cultural Contributions of North, Central, and South America painted between 1940 and 1943 by Boris Deutsch.

This building is on the National Register of Historic Places and well worth a visit. In general, downtown LA is not a tourist destination but I always enjoy walking around among the old buildings.
